- At 30km Guédelon, a castle in the making [History and Culture]


A crazy project ... An extraordinary adventure ... A visit not to be missed!!

In the heart of Puisaye, in Yonne, Burgundy, a team of fifty people have taken on an extraordinary feat: to build a castle using the same techniques and materials used in the Middle Ages.

The wood, stone, earth, sand and clay needed for the castle's construction are all to be found here, in this abandoned quarry. Watched by thousands of visitors, all the trades associated with castle-building - quarrymen, stonemasons, woodcutters, carpenters, blacksmiths, tile makers, basket makers, rope makers, carters and their horses - are all working together to complete the castle.

Work on the site began in 1997 and is scheduled to take 25 years to complete.

With over 1,000 years of age, St Fargeau Castle is the main historic site in Puisaye Forterre. Each summer, it is also the scene of a stunning historical show.

- At 30km 20 Mars to 30 Sept. : Reopening of Guédelon, a castle in the making [History and Culture]

Do not miss the 20th season of "Game of Stones": the medieval worksite of Guédelon opens from March 20th!

This year, the masons will crown the first tower, the Chapel Tower, with roof timbers.
The banker masons and the fixer masons will finish the stonework on the pigeon loft on the western corner tower.
They will also restart construction work on the gatehouse, the main gate into the castle courtyard.

- At 50km Ballad in the Middle Ages: guided tour of Noyers-sur-Serein [History and Culture]

George, the guide in medieval clothes will make you discover the architecture of the thirteenth century and hidden treasures (access within a defense tower) of Noyers-sur-Serein, vilage ranked among the most beautiful in France. You can admire a collection of armor and children can be photographed with shields and albardes. In 2010, the guide was honored with the medal of tourism.

- At 50km Noyers-Sur-Serein, one of the most beautiful villages in France [History and Culture]

Classified among the "most beautiful villages of France" Noyers is a preserved medieval city.

78 houses, aristocratic mansions of the fifteenth to the nineteenth centuries, bourgeois houses with wood sides or single houses of winemakers have been classified or registered as a historical monument.

Faced with mountains of Morvan, atop a steep hill, the Basilica of Sainte-Madeleine, listed as World Heritage by UNESCO, watches majestically on the winegrowers' houses and Renaissance mansions. This masterpiece of Romanesque and restored in the nineteenth century by Viollet-le-Duc art, made of Vézelay a place of pilgrimage and a starting point to Compostela.

- At 100km The Fontenay Abbey [History and Culture]

Declared World Heritage by UNESCO, Fontenay Abbey is one of the oldest Cistercian monasteries in Europe. Founded in 1118 by Saint Bernard in a marshy valley of Burgundy, Abbey crossed over eight centuries without the not change its magnificent Romanesque architecture. With the exception of the refectory was demolished, all the rooms are perfectly preserved: the church, the dormitory, the cloister, the chapter house, the cooker, the monks' room and forge.
